Stone Island Archivio Project

Originating in 1982 in Ravarino, Italy, Stone Island has since become one of the worlds most sought after street and sportswear brands. Founded by Massimo Osti, who was a graphic artist by profession and C.P. Company’s designer and art director.

Stone Island was originally a diffusion line of C.P. Company but then was bought by GFT in 1983. GFT(Gruppo Finanziario Tessile) is a company owned by Carlo Rivetti and his sister Cristina.

In 1984 Osti came across ‘Tela Stella’ a cloth that had a different colour on each side, he then created seven jackets, all inspired by military insignia. Stone Island is known for its Compass patch on the left sleeve, and it was originally created to symbolise love for the sea and the aim of constant research. Which is fitting as the company specialise in surface treatment of fabrics and dyeing techniques.

After ten years, Massimo Osti left Stone Island and Paul Harvey took over as the company’s fashion designer. He brought in his own ideas to the table, creating 24 collections, and leading the brand into the millennium. Harvey later left the brand in 2008 ‘to do something for the Planet’, which Rivetti respected. Since then, Rivetti has created a design team who have created the collections you see today.

Stone Island has been seen on the likes of Drake, the Gallager brothers, and many more.
